AWI has been a leader, at the federal, state, and international levels, in securing landmark laws and policies aimed at shielding animals from cruelty and needless suffering—as well as using litigation to ensure robust enforcement of these policies.

When AWI was established in 1951, only two federal laws to protect animals existed. Since then, we have worked diligently for the adoption and enforcement of laws and policies that will protect animals everywhere: in agriculture, in commerce, in our homes and communities, in research, and in the wild.
