woman pulls dog by leash near lab

Volume 65  Issue 3

Fall 2016

This year marks the 50thanniversary of the passage of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). AWI laboratory animal consultant Dorothy Dyce’s account of the horrific conditions at the premises of a Maryland dog dealer who sold animals to laboratories resulted in a February 4, 1966, article in Life magazine that helped galvanize support for passage of the AWA. Dorothy is pictured here with a starving dog she purchased from a dealer and nursed back to health. Read more about the history and impact of the AWA.
