About the Cover:
These cows are being raised on pasture. Most farmed animals in the United States, however, exist within cramped, barren industrial settings, with few legal protections. In the near-complete absence of federal laws governing the on-farm treatment of animals raised for food, a scattering of states have enacted laws intended to provide various forms of protection. According to an AWI examination of records, however, actual enforcement of these laws remains spotty. Learn more about our analysis of such laws and their enforcement, as well as our recommendations for establishing stronger protections for farmed animals.
In this Issue: We examine the scope and efficacy of state-level farmed animal protection laws, and we award the Schweitzer Medal to Dr. Temple Grandin for her pioneering work to promote more humane treatment of farmed animals. AWI and partners press the US government to implement long-overdue regulations aimed at reducing the death of marine mammals as bycatch in global fishing gear. Exposing the trade in exotic animal skins as a horror—rather than a fashion—show. AWI members help sanctuaries give new life to animals retired from research.
